Export before you clear browser data, switch devices, or reinstall — local storage is not a backup. Import merges into your existing list and skips anything already there, so re-importing the same file is harmless.
Optional cloud sync is on the list — and it will stay optional. The default will always be a list that lives on your device and answers to nobody.

Where exactly is my list stored?
In this browser's local storage, on this device. There is no account, no server call, and no sync — BirdBench never sees a single entry. The flip side: clearing site data deletes it. Export a JSON copy now and then.
What counts as a lifer?
The first time you've ever seen a species. Log a Wood Duck fifty times and you have one lifer and fifty sightings. Deduplication is by species name, ignoring case and extra spaces.
How do I move my list to another device?
Export JSON here, then use Import JSON there. Import merges rather than replaces and skips exact duplicates, so you can import the same file twice without doubling your list.
Does this replace eBird?
No, and it isn't trying to. This is a personal list for your own tracking. Submitting checklists to a scientific database is a different job — plenty of birders do both.
The species I want isn't in the suggestions.
Type it anyway. The typeahead is spelling help, not a gate — subspecies, hybrids, and forms all save fine. The list covers 1,000+ species recorded in the ABA Area.
Can I log the same species from a different trip?
Yes, and you should if you want the history. Each entry keeps its own date, location, and notes; only the first one is tagged as the lifer.
